RESUMO Background: Transformação hemorrágica (TH) é uma complicação frequente no acidente vascular cerebral (AVC) isquêmico independente do uso de terapia de reperfusão (TR). Diversos escores preditivos de TH foram elaborados. Entretanto, a maioria desses escores incluíram pacientes submetidos a TR — o que pode levar à má interpretação do risco de TH nos pacientes não submetidos a TR. Objetivo: Nosso objetivo é revisar escores preditivos já publicados e analisar a sua acurácia em nossa amostra. Métodos: Analisamos a acurácia de sete escores. Nosso banco foi criado de uma coorte de 1.565 pacientes consecutivos, admitidos entre 2015 e 2017 em um centro avançado de AVC. Os pacientes realizaram neuroimagem de controle em até sete dias. Uma comparação entre áreas abaixo da curva/característica de operação do receptor (AUC) foi realizada, analisando-se as diferenças entre grupos de pacientes tratados ou não com ativador de plasminogênio tecidual recombinante (tPA). Resultados: Nosso banco de dados proporcionou informação suficiente para avaliar sete escores, dos quais seis foram aplicados em pacientes tratados ou não com tPA. HAT (AUC 0,76), HTI (0,73) e SEDAN (0,70) foram os escores mais acurados em pacientes não tratados com tPA. SPAN-100 (0,55) teve a pior acurácia nos grupos. Três desses escores apresentaram diferentes valores de corte entre os grupos. Conclusões: Os escores apresentaram de boa a moderada acurácia na predição de TH em pacientes tratados com tPA. Três escores foram mais acurados em pacientes não tratados com tPA. A parametrização dessas características e a inclusão de mais pacientes não tratados com TR em um estudo multicêntrico poderia levar a escores mais acurados.

ABSTRACT Background: Hemorrhagic transformation (HT) is a complication in ischemic strokes, regardless of use of reperfusion therapy (RT). There are many predictive scores for estimating the risk of HT. However, most of them include patients also treated with RT. Therefore, this may lead to a misinterpretation of the risk of HT in patients who did not undergo RT. Objective: We aimed to review published predictive scores and analyze their accuracy in our dataset. Methods: We analyzed the accuracy of seven scales. Our dataset was derived from a cohort of 1,565 consecutive patients from 2015 to 2017 who were admitted to a comprehensive stroke center. All patients were evaluated with follow-up neuroimaging within seven days. Comparison of area under the curve (AUC) was performed on each scale, to analyze differences between patients treated with recombinant tissue plasminogen activator (tPA) and those without this treatment. Results: Our dataset provided enough data to assess seven scales, among which six were used among patients with and without tPA treatment. HAT (AUC 0.76), HTI (0.73) and SEDAN (0.70) were the most accurate scores for patients not treated with tPA. SPAN-100 (0.55) had the worst accuracy in both groups. Three of these scores had different cutoffs between study groups. Conclusions: The predictive scores had moderate to fair accuracy for predicting HT in patients treated with tPA. Three scales were more accurate for predicting HT in patients not treated with tPA. Through standardizing these characteristics and including more patients not treated with RT in a large multicenter series, accurate predictive scores may be created.

Abstract The aim of this study was to develop a bread enriched with varying level of ginger powder. Ginger powder incorporated in white flour at 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8% level to get a bread enriched with antioxidants and good rheological and sensorial properties. Total phenolic content (TPC) was gradually decreased with increasing percentage of ginger powder and maximum inhibition of DPPH was recorded (47.23%) at 2% supplemented sample. Texture of supplemented bread samples was increased in terms of hardness, gumminess and chewiness as compared to control sample. Mineral contents increased in each sample with increasing percentage of ginger powder such as Na (451.69 mg/kg), Ca (127.32 mg/kg), K (427.61 mg/kg), Fe (15.19 mg/kg), Zn (7.04 mg/kg) and Cu (3.47 mg/kg) respectively. However, showed worst results regarding rheological properties with hard dough structure. Among studied samples, a range of 2-4% ginger powder presented high antioxidants with better rheological characteristics compared with control samples.

Abstract Buckwheat is a precious source of various bioactive compounds like phenolics, flavonoids, rutin, and quercetin, etc. This research work was performed to harvest the nutraceutical potential of indigenous buckwheat varieties and their milling fractions (fine flour, coarse flour, bran flour, and husk). Common buckwheat (CBW) and Tartary buckwheat (TBW) were analyzed in terms of total phenolic content (TPC), total flavonoid content (TFC), and DPPH scavenging activity. When compared to common buckwheat, Tartary buckwheat had a higher total phenolic content (2101.421 mg GAE/100 g), total flavonoid content (1233.990 mg QEQ/100 g), and DPPH scavenging activity (44.51%).In the same context, throughout comparisons among milling fractions, the highest TPC and TFC were observed in the husk part of Tartary buckwheat while the lowest was found in common buckwheat. During the comparison of different solvents and their concentrations, it was observed that Ethanol 70% extracted a greater quantity of phytochemicals as compared to the rest of the other solvents and concentrations. This study recognized variability among buckwheat varieties and milling fractions for nutraceutical potential and nutritional qualities that can be used in the treatment of different maladies and food products.`

ABSTRACT Three parasitoid species Aphidius colemani, Aphidius matricariae (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) and Aphelinus abdominalis (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) were evaluated concerning their parasitism potential in two aphid species, Aphis glycines and Aphis gossypii (Hemiptera: Aphididae). The feeding of these two aphid species, even at low sums, can significantly damage photosynthesis and is found to transmit many kinds of plant viruses, which impact potential adverse effects on the plants. The overall parasitization on all nymphal ages in As. glycines was accomplished by Ad. colemani (60.50%), Ad. matricariae (49.16%) and Al. abdominalis (40%), while in As. gossypii parasitism exhibited by Ad. colemani (79.48%), Ad. matricariae (65.33%) and Al. abdominalis (58.83%). Aphelinus abdominalis exhibited the lowest parasitism in both given species as hosts. Significant differences in parasitism of different parasitoids and host species were observed. Concerning the preference of nymphal instars, we found that parasitoids species prefer to parasitize 1st- 4th instars in As. gossypii while in As. glycines 2nd, 1st, 3rd and 4th. Our results showed that the parasitism increases with the increase of parasitoid numbers and hosts densities.

Abstract Phytase production by Bacillus sp. (HCYL03) isolated from soil was investigated by solid-state fermentation (SSF) using wheat bran as substrate. After screening, morphological and molecular identification, Bacillus sp. (HCYL03) was selected for experiments due to high phytase activity. The SSF conditions were optimized by using one-variable-at-a-time strategy. A Box-Behnken design was employed to investigate the optimization of the most significant variables affecting the enzyme production. Maximum enzymes production was observed after 72 hrs with inoculums 2mL at 45oC and pH 5. Maximum partial purification was obtained with 60% ammonium sulfate. Protein contents in crude extract and partially purified enzyme were found to be 9.58 and 3.95 mg/mL, respectively. Optimum temperature and pH of the partially purified phytase after characterization were found to be 45oC and 5, respectively. The study of different metal ions sources revealed that Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions registered the highest enzyme productivity) but Zn2+, Cu2+, Cd2+, Mn2+and Fe2+ ions exhibited inhibitory effect on phytase activity. Briefly, the Bacillus sp. (HCYL03) production of phytase utilizing the low-cost agro-residue wheat bran as substrate is an innovative and cheap way for the production of this important enzyme and opens a new way for researchers to investigate this dome.

Abstract A cohort study of 90 days was designed to explore the hypercholesterolemic associated blood pressure with intake of extruded flaxseed powder (EFSP) fortified yogurts. The hypercholesterolemic subjects were distributed into two groups (1 and 2), then blood samples and blood pressure were taken. Descriptive statistics were used for comparison between groups. A significant increase in serum total cholesterol (TC) (6.330.48 to 6.510.04 mmol/dL) and low-density lipids-cholesterol (LDL-C) (5.170.28 to 5.370.47 mmol/dL) was observed in participants consuming plain milk yogurts for 30 days. A significant decrease in TC (6.470.95 to 6.28 ± 0.84) and LDL-C (5.350.29 to 5.130.44 mmol/dL) was observed in the group consuming EFSP fortified sheep milk yogurt. Similarly, a significant decrease in serum TC (6.381.01 to 6.200.98 mmol/dL), and LDL-C (5.301.16 to 4.980.99 mmol/dL) was noticed in the group consuming EFSP fortified cow milk yogurt. The intake of fortified yogurts reduced significantly serum cholesterol associated with blood pressure in both groups.

SUMMARY: Accurate implant sizing is one of the major determinants in defining the success of total knee arthroplasty (TKA). Current TKA implants are based on Caucasian knee morphometry which is well documented to be larger than Asian knees. Even more, with regards to sizing, implant mismatch tends to be more evident in the female population. This study was designed to evaluate the distal femur dimensions of Malaysian female patients who underwent TKA in our institution and to compare them with the current prosthetic system in use. A total of 199 female patients (207 knees) who underwent TKA were enrolled in this study. Intraoperatively, the AP dimensions (medial and lateral condyles) and mediolateral (ML) width were measured. Known dimension of the femoral component of the prosthetic knee system currently in use were compared with the morphological data. The average femoral component overhang was 2.11 mm (SD 3.94 mm). There was significant difference between the mean ML width of the resected femur and the femoral component (p<0.01). Analysis also revealed a significant positive and weak relationship between both, AP (medial and lateral) and ML dimension. The aspect ratio (ML/AP) of the native femur was generally smaller than the implant aspect ratio which is likely to cause overhang in our population. In general, this study shows that the knees of our female sub-population are even narrower than the other Asian female knees from previous studies. Implants should be designed based on the morphological data of the local population. Implant manufactures should tailor them to accommodate a smaller change in ML width for an increment in the AP length and provide several ML widths for one AP length to obtain a better fitting prosthesis hence curbing the problem of ML overhang.

RESUMEN: El tamaño exacto del implante es uno de los principales determinantes para definir el éxito de la artroplastía total de rodilla (ATR). Los implantes de TKA se basan en la morfometría de rodilla caucásica, cuyo tamaño está reportado como mayor que las rodillas asiáticas. Más aún, en lo que respecta al tamaño, el desajuste de los implantes tiende a ser más evidente en la población femenina. Este estudio fue diseñado para evaluar las dimensiones del fémur distal de pacientes mujeres malasias que se sometieron a ATR en nuestra institución y compararlas con el sistema protésico actual. En este estudio se incluyeron un total de 199 pacientes (207 rodillas) que se sometieron a ATR. Intraoperatoriamente, se midieron las dimensiones AP (cóndilos medial y lateral) y el ancho mediolateral (ML). Se comparó la dimensión conocida del componente femoral del sistema protésico de rodilla actualmente en uso con los datos morfológicos. El voladizo o sobresaliencia del componente femoral fue de 2,11 mm (DE 3,94 mm). Hubo una diferencia significativa entre el ancho ML medio del fémur resecado y el componente femoral (p <0,01). El análisis también reveló una relación significativa positiva y débil entre las dimensiones AP (medial y lateral) y ML. La relación de aspecto (ML / AP) del fémur nativo fue más pequeña que la relación de aspecto del implante, lo que probablemente cause un voladizo en nuestra población. En general, este estudio muestra que las rodillas de nuestra subpoblación femenina son incluso más estrechas que otras rodillas de mujeres asiáticas reportadas en estudios anteriores. Los implantes deben ser diseñados en base a los datos morfológicos de la población local. Los fabricantes de implantes deben adaptarlos a un cambio más pequeño en el ancho de ML para un incremento en la longitud AP y proporcionar varios anchos ML para una longitud AP con el objetivo de obtener una prótesis de mejor ajuste y frenar el problema del voladizo ML.

This study investigated Teacher Talk (TT) quantity, TT quality, teacher questions and feedback to determine whether the teacher-student interaction practices in a Pakistani language classroom align with ESL (English as a Second Language) principles or not. For this purpose, two lessons in a Pakistani secondary level ESL classroom were recorded and analysed through conversation analysis (CA). TT was observed to dominate in the classroom. The teacher used display questions more than referential questions. There was a slight use of second language (L2) in the classroom that was limited to the use of key terms in the lessons. Feedback was romantic in nature. All of these practices were observed as less effective teacher-student interaction practices. Therefore, the study concluded that teacher-student interaction did not align with ESL classroom management principles. Since TT, teacher questions and feedback were the important forms of teacher-student interaction in an ESL classroom, this study suggested to manage TT, teacher questions and feedback in the Pakistani ESL classroom for effective L2 teaching.

Resumen El derrame volátil es definido como la inestabilidad entre mercados. Sucede cuando el precio de la volatilidad cambia en un mercado causando un impacto rezagado en el precio de la volatilidad en otro mercado que se encuentra por encima los efectos locales del mercado. En este estudio los modelos GARCH son utilizados para examinar la posiblidad de transmición de volatilidad entre el índice KSE100( Pakistan) y el índice S&P500 (Estados Unidos). En otras palabras, para examinar la influencia de la volatilidad en otro y vice versa. El modelo EGCARCH también fue aplicado y se observa nuestro intento por analizar la simetría y la persistencia de la volatilidad en el KSE100 y el S&P500, se evidencia con claridad que choques en la volatilidad de ambos tiene un efecto asimetrico y persistente. A partir del estudio se observó que los choques al rendimiento de las acciones en un mercado no se transmiten al otro, en otras palabras, no hay presencia de efecto de derrame entre las dos bolsas de Valores.

Abstract The volatility spillover is defined as the transmission of instability from market to market. It occurs when the volatility price change in one market causes a lagged impact on volatility price in another market above the local effects of market. In this study the garchmodels are used to examine the possibility of volatility transmission between the KSE100 index (Pakistan) and S&P500 index (USA); in other words, to examine how the volatility in one market mayinfluence the other and vice versa. The egarchmodel is also applied and it was observed that our attempt to analyze symmetry and persistence in the KSE100 index and the S&P500 index volatility proved that there is clear evidence that shocks to the volatitlity of the KSE100 and S&P500 indexes have asymmetric and persistent effects. It is observed from the study that the shocks to the stock returns in one market do not transmit to the other; in other words, it appears that there is no spillover effect between the two stock markets.

Resumo O derramamento volátil é definido como a instabilidade entre mercados. Acontece quando o preço da volatilidade muda em um mercado causando um impacto atrasado no preço da volatilidade em outro mercado que se encontra por cima dos efeitos locais do mercado. Neste estudo os modelos GARCH são utilizados para examinar a possibilidade de transmissão de volatilidade entre o índice KSE100 (Paquistão) e o índice S&P500 (Estados Unidos). Em outras palavras, para examinar a influência da volatilidade em outro e vice-versa. O modelo EGCARCH também foi aplicado e se observa nossa tentativa por analisar a simetria e a persistência da volatilidade no KSE100 e o S&P500, se evidencia com claridade que choques na volatilidade de ambos os dois tem um efeito assimétrico e persistente. A partir do estudo se observou que os choques ao rendimento das ações em um mercado não se transmitem ao outro, em outras palavras, não há presença de efeito de derramamento entre as duas bolsas de Valores.

BACKGROUND: Isodon rugosus is used traditionally in the management of hypertension, rheumatism, tooth-ache and pyrexia. Present study was arranged to investigate I. rugosus for phytoconstituents, phytotoxic and cytotoxic activities to explore its toxicological, pharmacological potentials and to rationalize its ethnomedicinal uses. Briefly, qualitative phytochemical analysis of the plant extracts were carried out for the existence of alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, oils, glycosides, anthraquinones, terpenoids, sterols and tannins. Plant crude methanolic extract (Ir.Cr), its subsequent fractions; n-hexane (Ir.Hex), chloroform (Ir.Chf), ethyl acetate (Ir.EtAc), aqueous (Ir.Aq) and saponins (Ir.Sp) in different concentrations were tested for phytotoxic and cytotoxic activities using radish seeds and brine shrimps (Artemia salina) respectively. The phytotoxic activity was determined by percent root length inhibition (RLI) and percent seeds germination inhibition (SGI) while the cytotoxicity was obtained with percent lethality of the brine shrimps. RESULTS: Ir.Cr was tested positive for the presence of alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, oils, terpenoids, saponins, tannins and anthraquinones. Among different fractions Ir.Sp, Ir.Chf, Ir.EtAc, and Ir.Cr were most effective causing 93.55, 89.32, 81.32 and 58.68% inhibition of seeds in phytotoxicity assay, with IC50 values of 0.1, 0.1, 0.1 and 52 μg/ml respectively. Similarly, among all the tested samples, Ir.Sp exhibited the highest phytotoxic effect causing 91.33% root length inhibition with IC50 of 0.1 μg/ml. Ir.Sp and Ir.Chf were most effective against brine shrimps showing 92.23 and 76.67% lethality with LC50 values of 10 and 12 μg/ml respectively. CONCLUSIONS: It may be inferred from the current investigations that I. rugosus contains different secondary metabolites and is a potential source for the isolation of natural anticancer and herbicidal drug molecules. Different fractions exhibited phytotoxic and cytotoxic activities, thus providing pharmacological basis for ethnomedicinal uses of this plant.

Ten sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) lines, five testers, and 50 crosses developed in line x tester fashion were evaluated for general combining ability (GCA) and specific combining ability (SCA) effects in a triplicate randomized complete block design, in Faisalabad, during 2009-2010. Genetic variability among genotypes was assessed for days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, internodal length, leaf area, number of leaves per plant, head diameter, stem girth, percentage of filled achenes, 100 achene weight, achene yield per plant. A-1, A-7, A-27 and A-39 had significant general combining ability effects for days to flowering, days to maturity, internodal length, leaf area, and achene yield per plant. Among testers, A-26 and HBRS-1 were good general combiners for days to flowering, days to maturity, plant height, leaf area, head diameter, stem girth, percentage of filled achenes, 100-achene weight, and achene yield per plant. Crosses A-165 x A-26, A-41 x A-35, A-1 x G-12, and A-41 x HBPS-1 had significant and positive SCA effects for percentage of filled achenes, 100 achene weight, and achene yield per plant. Four best SCA crosses are recommended to be the best hybrids for cultivation. Non-additive type of gene action was found for all of the plant traits, which is desirable for heterosis breeding and may be exploited in hybrid seed production.

Diez líneas de maravilla (Helianthus annuus L.), cinco verificadores, y 50 cruzas desarrolladas en la forma línea x verificador fueron evaluadas para efectos de capacidad de combinación general (GCA) y capacidad de combinación específica (SCA) en un diseno de bloques completos al azar en triplicado, en Faisalabad, durante 2009-2010. La variabilidad genética entre genotipos se evaluó con días a floración, días a madurez, altura de planta, longitud entre nudos, área foliar, número de hojas por planta, diámetro de cabeza, circunferencia del tallo, porcentaje de aquenios llenos, peso de 100 aquenios, producción de aquenios por planta. A-1, A-7, A-27, y A-39 tuvieron efectos significativos de GCA para días a floración, días a madurez, longitud entre nudos, área foliar, y producción de aquenios por planta. Entre los verificadores, A-26 y HBRS-1 fueron buenos combinadores generales para días a floración, días a madurez, altura de planta, área foliar, diámetro de cabeza, circunferencia del tallo, porcentaje de aquenios llenos, peso de 100 aquenios, y producción de aquenios por planta. Las cruzas A-165 x A-26, A-41 x A-35, A-1 x G-12, y A-41 x HBPS-1 tuvieron efectos SCA significativos y positivos para porcentaje de aquenios llenos, peso de 100 aquenios, y producción de aquenios por planta. Cuatro cruzas fueron recomendadas como los mejores híbridos para cultivo. No se encontró acción génica de tipo aditiva para ningún rasgo, lo cual es deseable para heterosis y puede ser explotado en producción de semillas híbridas.

Presence of heavy metals in the aquatic systems has become a serious problem. As a result, there has been a great deal of attention given to new technologies for removal of heavy metal ions from contaminated waters. Biosorption is one such emerging technology which utilized naturally occurring waste materials to sequester heavy metals from industrial wastewater. The aim of the present study was to utilize the locally available agricultural waste materials for heavy metal removal from industrial wastewater. The wastewater containing lead and hexavalent chromium was treated with biomass prepared from ficus religiosa leaves. It was fund that a time of one hr was sufficient for sorption to attain equilibrium. The equilibrium sorption capacity after one hr was 16.95 ± 0.75 mg g-1 and 5.66 ± 0.43 mg g-1 for lead and chromium respectively. The optimum pH was 4 for lead and 1 for chromium. Temperature has strong influence on biosorption process. The removal of lead decreased with increase in temperature. On the other hand chromium removal increased with increase in temperature up to 40ºC and then started decreasing. Ion exchange was the major removal mechanism along with physical sorption and precipitation. The biosorption data was well fitted to Langmuir adsorption model. The kinetics of biosorption process was well described by the pseudo 2nd order kinetics model. It was concluded that adsorbent prepared from ficus religiosa leaves can be utilized for the treatment of heavy metals in wastewater
